  3. Unlocking the future of healthcare: The rise of health informatics and health information management careers

As healthcare continues its digital transformation, HIHIM careers are increasingly in demand. The need for professionals who can navigate the intersection of health sciences, technology, and data has never been greater. Careers in Health Informatics and Health Information Management (HIHIM) are experiencing explosive growth, offering not only stability and purpose, but also high earning potential and leadership opportunities in a rapidly evolving field.

A field on the rise

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for health information technologists and medical registrars – HIHIM careers – is projected to grow 16% from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations. This surge is driven by increasing reliance on data for clinical decision-making, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency across healthcare systems.

Forbes also recently listed Health Informatics among the highest-paying master’s degrees for 2025, highlighting the strong return on investment and upward mobility associated with the field.

Why HIHIM matters

Health Informatics and Health Information Management professionals are the connective tissue between clinical care, technology, and data analytics. They ensure that patient data is accurate, secure, and used to improve outcomes and streamline care. Whether it’s harnessing AI to detect trends, overseeing digital health transformation, or maintaining regulatory compliance, these professionals play a vital role in modern healthcare.

John Hartgraves, associate teaching professor at the University of Washington, underscores this importance:

“The HIHIM and Master of HIHIM (MHIHIM) programs prepare students for diverse careers in healthcare informatics, equipping them with expertise in health information management, digital health, data analytics, and regulatory compliance. Our graduates serve as the bridge between clinical, operational, and technology teams—ensuring data-driven insights support patient care, organizational strategy, and regulatory requirements.”

Education that empowers

The University of Washington is a leader in this space, offering both a Bachelor’s in HIHIM and a Master of Health Informatics and Health Information Management (MHIHIM). These programs are the longest-established and continuously re-accredited in the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho).

“With our bachelor’s program nearing a quarter century of cohorts, and the master’s degree first being offered in 2013, the University of Washington’s Health Informatics and Health Information Management (HIHIM) programs are the longest-established and continuously re-accredited HIHIM programs in the WWAMI region,” explains Karima Lalani, assistant teaching professor and director of HIHIM programs at the University of Washington. “Our two HIHIM programs sit at the intersection of health sciences, information technology, and business strategy.”

The curriculum is designed not only to build technical proficiency, but also to develop strategic and leadership skills that prepare graduates to lead digital health initiatives.

“University of Washington MHIHIM students are uniquely prepared with practical knowledge and skills to be prepared for roles in data analytics, AI, project management, strategic planning, and other health information/informatics specialty areas,” says Debi Primeau, a seasoned health information expert and clinical instructor at the University of Washington. “The program offers not only instruction, but also real world experience in preparation for students in their careers.”

Flexibility and reach

In recognition of the diverse needs of today’s learners, the MHIHIM program offers a hybrid-flexible delivery format. Students can choose to attend classes in person or join virtually from anywhere in the U.S., making it a compelling option for working professionals and those outside the Seattle area.

“Our unique hybrid-flexible format continues to attract students not just from the Western U.S., but also from other parts of the U.S.,” Lalani adds.

Building professional networks

The University of Washington’s HIHIM programs are also Academic Organizational Affiliates of HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society), giving students early access to a powerful network of professionals and resources that can launch and accelerate their careers.

“Our two HIHIM programs are industry-focused, and prepare students for careers in health informatics, data analytics, compliance, health information management, and project management,” Lalani explains. “This affiliation allows our students to jumpstart their industry networking and leverage additional industry growth opportunities, while they are students.”

A career with purpose and potential

Whether you’re just starting your career journey or looking to pivot into a high-growth, high-impact role in healthcare, Health Informatics and Health Information Management offers a compelling path forward. The demand is real, the opportunities are vast, and the potential to improve patient lives through smarter data is profound.

“Our Master of HIHIM program, celebrating its 12th anniversary in 2025, also helps experienced professionals to lead digital health and data governance projects,” says Lalani. “It’s more than a degree—it’s a launchpad for leadership.”
