Amanda Hoang, a student in the Health Informatics and Health Information Management (HIHIM) program, recently received two prestigious scholarships from the Washington State Health Information Management Association (WSHIMA): the Sister Peter Olivaint Scholarship and the Foundation Scholarship. We caught up with Amanda to discuss her experience in the program.
What drew you to the HIHIM program?
I was originally drawn to HIHIM because it covered various topics on the non-clinical side of health care such as data analytics, project management, and medical coding. After going through the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw how critical health information technologies are and wanted to learn ways to apply some of these innovations to deliver high-quality health care. I was also drawn to how the program was heavily project-based which allowed for more collaboration with other health care professionals.
Do you have any plans for after graduation?
After graduation, I plan on getting my RHIA credential and I will be interning at Kaiser Permanente-Norcal through the KP Launch Program. I will be working with the Clinical Ancillary Technologies Team as a Portfolio Optimization Group Intern, where I will develop reports and dashboards to track Kaiser Permanente’s applications for pharmacy, laboratory, medical imaging, medical device, and nursing. I hope to pursue a career in data analysis and explore other areas of the health care industry.
What are you involved with outside of UW?
I am currently working as a Patient Care Coordinator in the Gastrointestinal Cancer department at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my free time, I enjoy swimming, traveling, and baking.
