Deborah Moyo Daniels, a second-year student in the University of Washington’s Master of Health Informatics and Health Information Management (MHIHIM) program, received the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Washington Chapter’s Graduate Student Scholarship for 2025.
Honored to receive this award, Daniels describes graduate school as “no small nor easy journey, and having this support is both encouraging and energizing. It’s more than just financial help. It’s a reminder that I’m on the right path as I continue growing in the field of health informatics and working toward making a real impact.”

Advancing public health through technology

Daniels is an alumna of the Public Health-Global Health undergraduate program in the UW School of Public Health (SPH) and is currently a teaching assistant. Associate director of HIHIM programs John Hartgraves was elated to hear Daniels had received the award. “Deborah Moyo contributes with focus and purpose. She raises thoughtful questions and engages with complex issues like AI in diagnostics, data security, and telehealth delivery,” said Hartgraves. “What stands out is how she ties these topics back to patient impact and system improvement. She is always thinking about how technology can serve people more effectively,” he explains.
Both undergraduate and graduate students in the UW HIHIM programs receive free memberships to the HIMSS Washington Chapter, allowing students to apply for HIMSS scholarship opportunities. HIMSS is a global advisor, thought leader, and member-based society committed to reforming the global health ecosystem through information and technology. Reflecting on her time in the HIMSS Washington Chapter, Daniels notes “When I first joined the HIMSS WA Chapter, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect and I was excited to be part of a community of experienced professionals. It’s been inspiring to connect with members and learn from their experiences as I navigate my own path.”
