University of Washington students in the HIHIM programs now have access to additional health technology education, career advancement resources, and professional networking through HIMSS.
Joining a Global Network
The University of Washington’s Health Informatics and Health Information Management (HIHIM) programs are now offering additional health information and technology education, professional development resources, and networking opportunities to all students through the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Academic Organizational Affiliate (AOA) program.
HIMSS is a global advisor, thought leader, and member-based society committed to reforming the global health ecosystem through the power of information and technology. Housed in the UW’s School of Public Health, the HIHIM programs and HIMSS share common goals of improving population health outcomes and advancing equitable health care access through health information technologies.
Comprehensive Student Support
Eager for the HIHIM programs to become an AOA, Dr. Karima Lalani, director of HIHIM programs, notes “becoming an AOA allows HIHIM students to get a head start on networking opportunities, and it allows our students to learn more about industry trends and developments at the intersection of health information and technology.” Through HIMSS, students will receive additional resources helpful to their journey of advancing population health through information and technology.
Shelley Jellinghaus, a student in the Master of HIHIM (MHIHIM) program, is an active member of the HIMSS Washington State Chapter.
“The support and insights from the HIMSS community were instrumental as I embarked on the MHIHIM program at UW. Their interest in my studies, especially my capstone on Tribal data sharing and governance, has been very motivating.”

Expansive Professional Development and Learning Opportunities
The HIMSS AOA program provides HIMSS memberships and chapter memberships for all students. Members have access to professional networking, educational opportunities, committees and workgroups, publications, and many more resources and benefits. Additionally, the UW HIHIM programs will receive several student passes for the annual HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition; partnership for HIMSS Global Health Equity Week; special discounts on professional development exams, tools and select HIMSS events; and more.
Looking forward to this partnership, Jellinghaus expresses a similar excitement, “I am eager to leverage the network and knowledge gained through HIMSS and my studies to make impactful contributions in health informatics and information management.”
