Bradywood reflects upon first year as Washington State Board of Nursing Executive Director
In May, HSPop Alum Alison Bradywood took over as Executive Director of the Washington State Board of Nursing. She has continued to advocate for nurses and patients in this role, including by drafting the HB 2416: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Title Protection, which Governor Inslee signed into law on April 3rd.

Sherry Wu (MPH ’23) Awarded APHA’s Masters Student Research Award in Aging and Public Health
Sherry Wu, Research Coordinator and UW alum, has been awarded the 2023 Masters Student Research Award in Aging and Public Health. Wu says, “Our society’s emphasis on productivity categorizes older adults as less desirable. But the experiences and wisdom of older adults are invaluable, and they have a right to fulfilling and healthy lives.”

Balancing Act: Pursuing a Master’s Degree While Working Full-Time
For students already immersed in their careers, pursuing a master’s degree while working full-time can seem insurmountable. To better support students with full-time careers, the MHIHIM program is delivered in a flexible hybrid online format called HyFlex (Hybrid Flexible) where classes are held both in-person and online simultaneously.

Online MPH alum Michael Tynan publishes thesis for CDC
Michael measured air quality at casinos in 2022 during a tobacco study. “It gives us that comparison point that can help casino employees, for example, understand what kind of exposure levels they’re looking at compared to a smoke-free environment.” he said.

New name better reflects our outstanding department
We are now the Department of Health Systems and Population Health (HSPop). The new name for the department was selected using a collaborative, inclusive process that involved department faculty, staff, and students.

Alum helps Washington prioritize COVID-19 resource allocation
HSPop alumn Douglas Diekema played a unique role in helping to develop Washington state’s approach to allocating precious resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.
