Bio
Adrienne Shapiro, MD, PhD (she/her), is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Global Health and Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at the University of Washington and is Associate Medical Director of the Seattle Vaccine Trials Unit at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Her research focuses on strategies to improve diagnosis and prevention of tuberculosis (TB), particularly for people with HIV and in low and middle income country settings. She is principal investigator a project to develop optimized TB diagnostic algorithms using novel point-of-care diagnostic tools for TB and leads studies of delivery approaches to improve access to TB preventive therapy to people at risk for TB. Dr. Shapiro conducts clinical trials of new medications to prevent HIV and vaccines to prevent HIV, TB, and other infections. Working with the CNICS consortium, a large multi-site cohort of people living with HIV in the United States, Dr. Shapiro studies vaccine uptake and the effect of emerging infections in this population, including COVID-19 and mpox. Her investigative methods include clinical trials, implementation science studies, and observational epidemiologic approaches with cohort studies and diagnostic test accuracy studies. In addition, she serves as an evidence reviewer for the WHO and other national advisory bodies to translate research evidence into clinical and public health practice guidelines. Clinically, Dr. Shapiro serves as a primary care physician for people living with HIV and attends on the inpatient Infectious Diseases consult service at Harborview Medical Center.
