Bio
I am a medical sociologist/social epidemiologist with expertise in survival studies, health services research, and evaluation of outcomes of social interventions. I teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in research methods in public policy, public health, and program evaluation, as well as organization and delivery of health services.
Much of my research has focused on socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities in long-term cancer survival and physical and emotional functioning among long-term cancer survivors: examples have included studies of work disability among elders and sexual function among survivors of cervical cancer. My research in program evaluation has concentrated on interventions aimed at promoting health and preventing disease through means such as improved nutrition and community empowerment.
Focusing on population health tracible to differences in health behavior and utilization of health services, I have paid special attention to California’s Latino community. I have significant experience in managing research projects and academic programs, including visioning, planning, and fiscal management. In research, I take the lead in convening and managing teams, coordinating and integrating the work of specialists in different disciplines, and writing articles for scientific publications.
