  3. Director of HIHIM programs contributes to book on health care management fundamentals

HIHIM Program Director’s research provides essential briefings on key topics in health care management that every current or aspiring health care leader needs to know.

Dr. Karima Lalani

Dr. Karima Lalani, director of HIHIM programs at UW, a seasoned health care management and informatics researcher and professional, is a contributing author to the new book Essentials of Healthcare Strategy and Performance Management. Co-authored by Dr. James R. Langabeer and Dr. Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, the book “explores the most critical components of business strategy and performance management for modern, complex health care organizations” Lalani describes.

Insights on Health Care Leadership Strategies

Dr. Lalani contributed as the sole author of a chapter on leadership. She described her research focus on the extremely poor financial performance in recent years faced by some health care organizations, “with data suggesting that up to 10% of hospitals will go bankrupt or face closure within the next 10 years. Despite this data, little pragmatic evidence exists to offer insights into how to create better strategies to improve performance, build resiliency and align stakeholders.”

Her research aims to address this. “This book provides essential briefings on key topics that every current or aspiring leader needs to know,” she said. Dr. Lalani’s professional background includes over 15 years of experience in health care workforce education and training, strategic planning, and digital health. She is also a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

A Lasting Impact and Learning More

When asked about the impact of this work, Dr. Lalani noted the book will “help leaders of health care organizations, as wells as students who aspire to become health care leaders, answer questions about how they can maintain a strategic and competitive advantage over other players in their market.”
