International Applicants and Students
We welcome applications from international applicants. International students must have a U.S. visa status that allows for academic study at the University of Washington. International students who require F-1 or J-1 visa status are not eligible to apply for part-time programs or study.
Applicants whose native language is not English may need to share proof of English language proficiency. If applicants are required to provide test scores as proof of English language proficiency, they will enter their test scores in the online application with the UW Graduate School or SOPHAS. Official test scores may need to be submitted to UW at a future date.
Specific application steps are provided on the admissions pages for individual HSPop programs.
International Applicants: Health Insurance
International students are required by federal and state laws to maintain health insurance while studying in the United States. Learn more about the International Student Health Insurance Program (ISHIP).
International Applicants: Financial Aid and Support
Regrettably, we cannot guarantee financial support for international students. We sometimes have research assistant positions available, which are open to international students. These positions, however, are unpredictable and rarely can be arranged until the student is enrolled. Pre-doctoral fellowships are federally funded and therefore open only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Undocumented Applicants and Students
We welcome applications from people who are undocumented in the United States. The UW Graduate Student Excellence and Equity (GSEE) offers application guidance and resources. Once admitted to a program, the University of Washington Leadership Without Borders provides support to undocumented students.
Applicants whose native language is not English may need to share proof of English language proficiency. If applicants are required to provide test scores as proof of English language proficiency, they will enter their test scores in the online application with the UW Graduate School or SOPHAS. Official test scores may need to be submitted to UW at a later date.
Specific application steps are provided on the admissions pages for HSPop individual programs.
Non-Degree Info: Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) and Non-matriculated (NM) Status
Both non-matriculated (NM) and graduate non-matriculated (GNM) status allow students to enroll in graduate courses without first being admitted to a degree program.
In HSPop, programs grant GNM status and allow GNM/NM course registration on a case-by-case basis. Not all courses are eligible. Acceptance as a GNM/NM student does not guarantee priority for later acceptance into a degree program.
Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) vs Non-Matriculated (NM)
Transferable Credits for a Graduate Degree Program
- GNM status credits may be transferable (although not guaranteed).
- NM status credits are generally not transferable to a graduate degree program.
Application Process
- GNM application requires official transcripts for previous degrees.
- NM is not a formal status and has no application (just follow the approval and registration process).
GNM/NM requirements for HSERV courses
First review HSERV course descriptions to select which courses you’re interested in taking as a GNM/NM student. Then, at the top of the page, click on the time schedules for upcoming academic quarters to determine if any of those courses will be offered.
Before applying for GMN/NM status, contact hservmph@uw.edu to check if there is currently space available in the upcoming quarter for the specific HSERV course(s) you’re interest in. After you apply, contact hservmph@uw.edu again so we know to look for your application.
Note:
- COPHP courses are not available to GNM/NM students.
- Fee based courses are not eligible for state employee tuition exemption.
