Bio
David J. Reyes, DNP, MN/MPH, RN, PHNA-BC is Dean and Associate Professor in the School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership at the University of Washington Tacoma. His teaching, scholarship, and leadership focus on population health, health equity, public health systems, community-engaged research, and nursing workforce development. Dr. Reyes brings more than three decades of experience spanning nursing practice, public health leadership, higher education, and academic administration.
Prior to joining academia, he held leadership positions with Public Health – Seattle & King County, where he directed public health programs and services for diverse communities. Nationally, he has served on the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association, chaired its Strategic Planning Committee, and previously served as Chair of the Public Health Nursing Section. He has also held leadership roles with the Washington State Public Health Association, including President, and has contributed to national public health and nursing policy initiatives through organizations such as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Academies of Medicine’s Standing Committee on Family Planning.
Dr. Reyes’s research and professional work advance equitable healthcare, public health nursing, and community-centered approaches to improving population health. His scholarship has focused on health equity, food justice, vaccine confidence, community engagement, and nursing workforce diversity, with partnerships spanning local, state, national, and international settings.
Dr. Reyes is a 2023 recipient of the University of Washington School of Nursing’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award, and the University of Washington Tacoma’s 2020 Distinguished Community Engagement Award.
