Connect with Faculty
We highly recommend that prospective students connect with one or more core PhD faculty before applying. We match incoming students with first-year faculty advisors based on the fit of research interests, student preferences, and faculty availability. These faculty advisors often become students’ dissertation chairs.
Prospective students do not need to secure a commitment from a faculty member before applying. Though, we strongly encourage you to review faculty profiles to identify those with shared research interests and reach out to let them know you’re interested in listing them on your application as a potential first-year faculty advisor; and to discuss shared interests, mentor/student fit, current projects, opportunities for student involvement, or any questions you have for that specific faculty member.
There will be a space on the application for you to list any faculty you are interested in working with. We recommend listing at least 2-3 faculty members, if possible.

- PhD Area of Emphasis – faculty leads are listed under each AOE title
- PhD Training Grants – click on each grant to find their faculty leads
Sit in on a Class
If you are interested in sitting in on a class, please email the instructor beforehand to ask for permission. Most faculty welcome prospective students in the classroom, but they want to anticipate the visit.
Visits and Tours
Although we don’t offer tours specifically for the UW Department of Health Systems and Population Health, the University of Washington offers tours of the campus at large.
