Prepare to Apply
Follow the steps below to prepare to apply to the HIHIM program.
Complete HIHIM Admissions Prerequisites
Prerequisites:
- Minimum 90 credits
- Minimum grade of 2.0 in a Statistics course (4-5 credits)
- Minimum grade of 2.0 in a Human Anatomy & Physiology course or series (5-6 credits; with lab preferred)
For early application cycle, all prerequisites must be completed before applying. For general application cycle, prerequisites can be in progress if they will be completed before starting HIHIM classes.
Draft Statement of Purpose
Length: 750 words (max)
The Health Informatics and Health Information Management (HIHIM) Undergraduate Program seeks students who are academically prepared, demonstrate integrity, and bring broad perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.
Successful applicants understand the importance of the HIHIM industry, have a motivation to learn, and an interest in solving real-world problems through health information and technology. While prior experience in HIHIM is not expected, students should demonstrate curiosity about the field and a willingness to engage with its challenges.
The program values students who have shown resilience in overcoming adversity and who are committed to the HIHIM profession and the communities they will serve.
Instructions:
Demonstrate your understanding of HIHIM in an essay using the following prompt. Please respond in a single, cohesive essay. Do not answer in bullet points. Strong responses are reflective, specific, and written in your own voice. While AI tools can support writing, they should not replace your personal experiences and perspectives.
Prompt:
Explain your interest in HIHIM by describing a specific moment when information, data, records, technology, communication, or documentation affected a person, process, decision, or outcome. Share what happened, why it mattered, and how it shaped your interest. This experience may come from healthcare, work, school, volunteering, or another setting, but it should clearly connect to the role of information, data, records, technology, communication, documentation, systems, or decision-making. Direct healthcare experience is not required.
Reflect on a time you have faced a challenge either in an academic, personal, or professional setting. What strategies helped you overcome these challenges and how did you grow from the experience?
In your essay, include any relevant experiences or exposure related to healthcare, information, technology, administration, or problem-solving. Strong responses include specific details and reflections that are unique to your experiences rather than general statements that could apply to any applicant.
Apply
Current UW Seattle students only need to submit an application to the HIHIM program. UW Bothell and UW Tacoma students are considered transfer students to UW Seattle and will need to submit a UW Application before submitting the HIHIM application. Returning students will need to start by submitting the Returning Student Request Form.

If you do not have any non-UW courses that are not already listed on your UW record, please upload a copy of your unofficial UW transcript or a degree audit (DARS) for the HIHIM major.

After submitting your application, log in to check your application status.
Admitted Students
Admitted students are required to attend a New HIHIM Student Advising Session in August and HIHIM Orientation in September. Admitted students will be required to complete a learning module for basic knowledge of computers and standard productivity software, information retrieval skills, and electronic communication skills.
