We understand the challenges of paying for and funding higher education goals, and we work with current and prospective students to be transparent and connect them to the assistance they need. To identify the best sources of financial support, we encourage potential and current students to review the information below.

Cost

The UW Master of Health Informatics and Health Information Management (MHIHIM) is a self-sustaining, fee-based program administered by the UW Department of Health Systems and Population Health (HSPop) in partnership with UW Continuum College.

Course fees are charged on a per-credit basis and are the same for Washington state resident students and nonresident students. In addition to course fees, students pay other required fees each quarter, including registration, technology, and U-PASS (bus and transportation) fees. Costs for textbooks and other course materials are extra.

Payments are due by the third Friday of the quarter.

*Estimated cost is based on 2024–2025 rates and does not factor in other required fees, textbooks, or expected annual fee increases.

Financial Aid and Funding

A variety of financial aid, scholarships, funding, and resources are available for students.

Scholarships for Current Students

Our program, department, school, and university provide various scholarships for students. HIHIM students are eligible for the program and department scholarships below.

Health Systems Excellence, Equity, and Distinction (HSEED) Award

Amount: Up to $5,000

The UW Department of Health Systems and Population Health (HSPop) established the Excellence, Equity, and Distinction (HSEED) Award to increase diversity in public health — including people who are LGBTQIA+, veterans, community members of color, from lower income backgrounds, and/or have disabilities.

Who Can Apply: First-year students who meet the HSEED eligibility criteria.

Gretchen C. Murphy Award

Amount: $250 – $500 (varies each year depending on available funding)

The Gretchen C. Murphy award is offered to current students who embody the program’s values of diversity, service, and leadership, as well as demonstrate knowledge of and ability to apply these values within the program and in health care practice. The scholarships focus on different topics that recognize the variety of skills and interests and the diversity our students bring to the program and the field.

Who Can Apply: Second-year students

Application Overview

Our HIHIM scholarships listed above share the same deadline and application form. Essay requirements, details, and the link to the application form are emailed directly to current students. HIHIM scholarship essays must be unique to the year and specific to the award. Please do not submit an essay from a previous year, and do not submit the same essay for each award. Students can apply for more than one scholarship but cannot receive more than one award.

Award decisions are made by the program directors and a review committee of teaching faculty. Applicants are anonymous during the review process. Award winners are recognized publicly in the alumni newsletters and other communication channels.

Application Opens: Autumn Quarter
Application Deadline: Autumn Quarter
Applicants Notified: Prior to the start of Winter Quarter

Resources for International and/or Undocumented Students

We welcome international and/or undocumented applicants.

International students must have a visa status that allows for academic study at the University of Washington. Because the UW Master of Health Informatics and Health Information Management (MHIHIM) program is a part-time program, international students who require F-1 or J-1 visa status are not eligible.

To learn more about applying to the University and available financial options, visit our department’s student resources page.

Professional Association Scholarships

Students also may qualify for scholarships offered through professional associations listed below.

Additional Student Resources

The UW Department of Health Systems and Population Health (HSPop) has a list of student resources and financial support, including student services such as counseling, housing, and/or child care, among others.

If you contact the Office of Student Financial Aid or other UW offices, it’s helpful to share that you are inquiring about a fee-based program. Fee-based students are not eligible for tuition exemptions or university grants.
